Our Story

A Taste of Cuba in SF

Social Cafe is a Cuban cafe and bakery in San Francisco with counter service offering pastries, sandwiches, salads, specialty coffee, and more with menu items that cater to the unique tastes of the community. Our search for the perfect pastelito (Cuban pastry) on the West Coast led us to create our own to share with others we care about and love. Conveniently located on Bryant Street in the Bay Area, we offer all the flavors and ambiance of a Cuban cafe and bakery in Miami right here in San Francisco.

Our motivation to start this business began with nostalgia over our Cuban roots in Miami. Our dream was to have a place where people could gather and enjoy fresh, portable, made-to-order pastries and specialty coffees while reconnecting with friends and family. We continue that mission today, offering dependable and efficient counter service featuring authentic breakfast and lunch food items with a Cuban flair.

Our history is a rich one. Owner and Chef Terry Romeu’s culinary journey has taken her through a diverse range of restaurant experiences, from Farm-to-Table and Fine Hellenic cuisine to Michelin Guide and plant-based establishments. In 2012, she made a significant stride by introducing her own creation, Pika Sauce, to the culinary scene. Pika Sauce is an all-natural spicy sauce, free from artificial preservatives, sugars, and gluten. The exceptional quality of Pika Sauce earned Terry an invitation to the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s Taste of America event at Sur La Table in Boca Raton’s Mizner Park in 2013.

Ruben, born in Cuba, made Miami, Florida, his home at the age of seven. He remembers his stops at the local bakery serving pastelitos and croquetas before heading off to school. He would continue that ritual as he became an adult. Cafe con leche, pastelitos and croquetas were staple items. However, upon relocating to California in 2015, he swiftly noticed the absence of a Cuban bakery in the area. Ruben brings more than 15 years of operational management and retail development to the mix. His experience along with his passion for Cuban coffee, pastelitos and croquetas was the spark for Social Cafe.

At Social Cafe, our mission is to create an authentic Cuban bakery experience that transports our customers to the vibrant streets of Havana. We achieve this by meticulously preparing traditional Cuban pastries, bread, sandwiches, and coffee, using high-quality ingredients and time-honored recipes. Our warm and welcoming environment, coupled with exceptional customer service, ensures that every visit to Social Cafe is a delightful and memorable experience. We actively engage with the local community, fostering cultural appreciation through events, collaborations, and partnerships. By embracing our Cuban heritage and sharing it with San Francisco, we aim to be the premier destination for those seeking an immersive taste of Cuba.
